Our Mission

The Milly Sawyers Center is a community organization working to build cultural consciousness and civic strength in Southwest Missouri. The Center brings people together to reckon with shared history, address present-day challenges, and imagine a more connected, equitable future.

Our Founders

The Milly Sawyers Center was founded by Charity Jordan Rex and Kunti D. Bentley.
They currently serve MSC as co-directors.
Charity Jordan Rex
Charity Jordan Rex
Charity Jordan Rex has over two decades of experience as an educator, trainer, and speaker. She was appointed to the Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Council for Sweet Adelines International. She served as the Chair for the Mayor’s Commission on Human Rights.

Having presented to people and organizations across the region, she has helped audiences embrace diversity and be advocates for change. She knows that educated communities are safer communities. She champions communities of belonging through education, connection and equality. She lives and works in southwest Missouri.
Kunti D. Bentley
Kunti D. Bentley
Kunti D. Bentley has two decades of experience fostering meaningful community engagement opportunities, developing partnerships between institutes of higher education and nonprofit agencies, and mobilizing assets to address campus and community needs. She earned her B.A. in Global Studies at Missouri State University and received an M.A. in Communication with a Nonprofit Emphasis at Drury University.

With a passion for initiatives that inculcate a sense of belonging and inclusion, Kunti centers her work on the critical need for creating sustainable programs and community-based projects that are equitable, culturally responsive, and culturally relevant. Her mission is to utilize an intersectional, interdisciplinary, and trauma-informed approach to addressing societal inequities with the goal of creating safer communities for all.
